first_imgAmid a widespread crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses and meat shops in Uttar Pradesh by the Yogi Adityanath government, Vikram Saini, BJP MLA for Khatauli, said he would break the limbs and hands of those who show disrespect to cows and kill gau mata.At a function in the riot-affected Shamli district on Saturday, Mr. Saini, an accused in the 2013 Muzzaffarnagar riots, said, “I contested this election shouting Bharat Mata ki jai and Vande Mataram. I asked for votes, saying those who feel proud to say Vande Mataram and Bharat Mata ki jai, and those who consider the cow gau mata should vote for me.”Underlining the divisive issues which dominated the election campaign and the communal polarisation in the sensitive region of Muzaffarnagar and Shamli, Mr. Saini added, “I did not ask for votes from people who hesitate to say Vande Mataram and those who do not say Bharat mata ki jai.”‘Our govt. in power’Mr. Saini’s assertion that “Now that our government has come to power, I will fulfil the promises”, met with celebratory applause from an audience largely consisting of youth. Sanjeev Baliyan, a Minister in the Narendra Modi government, and Suresh Rana, the BJP MLA for Thana Bhawan, shared the stage with him.Mr. Saini hails from Kawal village in Muzaffarnagar, the flashpoint of the 2013 communal riots. He was accused of making inflammatory speeches during the riots and was charged under the stringent National Securities Act by the then Samajwadi Party government. The BJP gave him ticket from the Khatauli Assembly constituency in Muzaffarnagar district.Speaking to reporters later on Sunday, Mr. Saini remained unapologetic about his remarks, and said he had spoken “with an open heart in the language of a villager.”last_img
