Special Teams Player of the Week: Storm Ruiz – Sr. – Placekicker – League City, TexasResponsible for more than half of SFA’s point total, Ruiz banged home all four of his field-goal tries, marking a career high for the senior from League City, Texas. He added a pair of extra points in the ‘Jacks home opener and became the first SFA kicker to make four field goals in a game since Nov. 3, 2012. FRISCO, Texas – Central Arkansas’ Lujuan Winningham and Davis Harrison, along with Stephen F. Austin’s Storm Ruiz, earned Southland Football Player of the Week honors, the league announced Monday. All weekly awards are presented by MidSouth Bank. The Bears completed a 24-16 comeback victory on the road over FCS foe Austin Peay on Saturday, scoring the final 14 points of the game. Seeking its first 3-0 start since 2010, UCA returns home to begin conference play against Abilene Christian at 6 p.m. Saturday and can be seen on ESPN+. Winningham, a sophomore wide receiver, picked up a second-straight Offensive Player of the Week and teammate Harrison, a junior safety, secured defensive honors. Senior kicker Ruiz secured Special Teams Player of the Week laurels. Honorable Mention: Luke Anthony, Abilene Christian; Jon Copeland, UIW; Bailey Zappe, Houston Baptist. Offensive Player of the Week: Lujuan Winningham – So. – Wide Receiver – Humble, TexasWinningham once again played a major role in the Bears’ offense, hauling in eight passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Both his scoring grabs came in the fourth quarter, erasing a 16-10 Governor lead. Through two games, Winningham has been “Mr. Fourth Quarter” with five catches for 196 yards and four touchdowns. Honorable Mention: Bailey Giffen, Lamar; Bailey Raborn, McNeese; Taylor Wallace, Central Arkansas. Ruiz nailed a career-best four field goals, but the Lumberjacks dropped a 37-26 decision to Tarleton State, a top-five squad at the Division II level. SFA wraps up non-conference play on the road against Southern Utah at 7:05 p.m. Saturday. Honorable Mention: Cole Burgess, Abilene Christian; Caleb Johnson, Houston Baptist. Defensive Player of the Week: Davis Harrison – Jr. – Safety – Meridian, Miss.Harrison had a team-high seven tackles, including a pair on Austin Peay’s final drive that ended with an interception with 14 seconds left. Trailing 13-10 going into the final quarter, he helped lead a Bears’ defense that held the Governors to just a field goal in the final period and allow UCA’s offense to pull off another comeback victory at 24-16. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
