Owners of Illegal Airbnb rental where massive gunfight broke out reach settlement

first_imgPer today’s settlement, which you can read here, the couple will fork over $185,000 in civil penalties and be barred from any short-term rentals on the property for five years, mitigating those illegal profits and then some. The couple is also mandated to render their home code-compliant within 180 days and abide by a 10-year injunction on illegal behavior on the property.Rogers and Singh purchased the home in 2010 and, per city records, have not listed it as their primary residence since about 2013. Nevertheless, per the City Attorney, Rogers in 2016 declared under penalty of perjury during his short-term rental application that he resided in the home for at least 275 nights per year and would maintain the property “in compliance with all applicable City codes.” The Office of Short-Term rentals denied his application when it concluded 212 Banks Street was not the couple’s primary residence and, to boot, contained an unwarranted kitchen and room.“San Francisco’s short-term rental laws exist for a reason — so that our homes aren’t turned into illegal hotels,” said City Attorney Dennis Herrera at the conclusion of the settlement agreement. “These owners deliberately chose to break the law. They lied on their application, got caught, and went about illegally renting the property anyway. They exploited the housing crisis for profit, putting money ahead of their neighbors’ safety.” The City Attorney today announced a settlement with the offshore owners of an illegal short-term rental that was the site of a cinematic 2017 gun battle in which more than 100 bullets were sprayed about a sleepy Bernal Heights neighborhood while terrified party-goers leaped from rooftop to rooftop to flee.In the wee hours of Oct. 12, 2017, gunfire erupted outside 212 Banks St. as a party turned sour in the worst way. Miraculously, although more than 100 rounds were discharged in a residential neighborhood, only one person was struck and injured (10 weeks later, on Jan. 28, a neighbor also injured himself when he discovered a discarded gun in his backyard and shot himself in the hand). The city went after homeowners Erik Rogers and Anshu Singh, in May filing a lawsuit against the married couple, who rented out their house on Airbnb and other platforms but were living in Indonesia at the time of the shootout. The couple had applied to the city’s Office of Short-Term rentals for a permit, but had been denied. Later, they illegally transformed their single-unit home into a two-unit dwelling and rented it out for more than a year on Airbnb and other sites, bagging some $160,000 in profits for rates sometimes exceeding $700 a night. MSPCA stands its ground against the introduction of dog racing

first_img SharePrint Ritratt: FacebookRitratt: Facebook The Malta Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (MSPCA) has stood its ground against reports stating the possibility of the introduction of dog races at the Marsa race track.MSPCA stated that is is completely against the recent news where part of the current Marsa Race Track Consortium can be changed into a dog race track. The Society added that while the current race track conditions should be improved in order to prevent horses from being injured, the proposal is focusing on the aim of the race track without considering animal rights.Read: Race horses that get injured get suffocated to deathThe organisation explained the horrible outcomes this proposal would bring on the safety on dogs. It described how many dogs would end up injured or dead either because of the races or after being abandoned when the dogs are no longer fit for races. It insisted that dogs should serve as companions and not as objects which people can place bets on.The Society said that it was shocked that the Maltese Government is confirming these tendencies instead of improving animals’ conditions. It stated that the Animal Welfare Department is already lacking the sufficient funds, training, and labour.MSPCA reminded Government that the organisation is still doing additional work which was supposed to be done by Government itself, such as searching for new premises in order to build new shelters.Watch: Man abandons dog in blazing sun after being told sanctuary is fullWhatsApp last_img read more

2016 in Review MTN Uganda in Telecoms

first_imgAdvertisement MTN Uganda is a subsidiary of MTN Group; a multinational telecommunications group connecting approximately 232 million people in 22 countries across Africa and the Middle East. With over 10.4 million subscribers making them the largest telecom company in Uganda. In 2009, MTN Uganda introduced NOW found to be the most popular banking system dubbed MTN Mobile Money. According to sources, as of March 2015, the company controlled 80% of the mobile money market in the country, till now, we have seen that now most people prefer banking their money on phone. We started with Mobile Money because, I’ve to say, it’s one of the outstanding achievements from MTN Uganda, the fact being that they’re the first telecom to introduce the system, with other telecom companies too adopting the system. However, in our review this year, we see what MTN Uganda has really been upto; from introducing MoKash to MyPakaPaka to Reductions in their Mobile Money in the festive season, the MTN Kampala marathon, MTN Uganda at 18, and more other exciting developments they’ve had in 2016.MTN Uganda Launches MoKash – Mobile Money Savings and Loans – Advertisement – On August 9th, 2016, MTN Uganda in partnership with Commercial Bank of Africa, Uganda introduced a new product that allows customers to save money and access microloan products, using their cell phone. Dubbed MoKash, the product is readily available on personal accounts and on accounts for small and medium-sized enterprises. In less than three months after it’s launch, MTN Uganda and CBA Uganda announced how the product had signed up more than 1,000,000 customers, marking a remarkable milestone in the growth projections of the product.MTN Uganda Bid Farewell to Brian GouldieAs we ended the month June, Brian Gouldie who holds an extensive experience in the telecom industry on July 1st, 2016 had his last stay at MTN Uganda as their Chief Executive Officer after he had served a two-year service at the telecom since July, 2014.During his farewell, Brian thanked the leadership team he worked with and the entire MTN team and also commented how Uganda has got great opportunities.I pray tribute to the leadership team and the entire MTN team. Thank you. – @briang_jozi #CEOFarewell pic.twitter.com/wTOMb0coRF— MTN Uganda (@mtnug) June 30, 2016South Africa High Commissioner H. E. Solly Mollo who graced Brian’s Farewell commended him for his exemplary leadership during his time with MTN Uganda, while Dr. Charles Mbiire in his remarks said; “We operate as a family and we thank Brian and his beautiful wife for a great job done.”Wim Vanhelleputte replaced Brian as effective of July 1st, 2016, as the new MTN Uganda’s Chief Executive Officer.MTN Launches it’s 13th Annual Kampala MarathonI had to make sure at least we have this in the top 5 of our list. I have to say, MTN Kampala Marathon is one of the biggest sporting events in year, and we surely couldn’t miss talking about it.On November 1st, 2016, MTN announced it’s 13th annual Kampala Marathon – following the theme “Run for Kampala”, with a mission to rally runners to raise funds for the implementation of improved sanitation facilities for pupils through the construction of environmentally friendly smart bio-toilet facilities in a number of selected public primary schools in the outskirts Kampala.#MTNMarathon – We are running for a better Uganda come November 20th. We are also running to improve sanitation… https://t.co/GjrKWP5zUR— MTN Uganda (@mtnug) November 3, 2016On 20th November the day of the event, all roads led to Kololo Airstrip where the event was scheduled to take place attracting over 20,000 runners, pulled it as usual.MTN Mobile Money customers can now send money to Kenya and RwandaAfter launching their international mobile money transfer services in 2015 only supporting inbound transfers where MTN Mobile Money customers could only receive money from Kenya and Rwanda, this time around the reverse was made true. In their another exciting development in the mobile money innovations, MTN Uganda on November 29th, 2016 announced the launch of outbound mobile money transfer services to Rwanda and Kenya.MTN launches customized offers on voice bundles with MyPakaPakaMTN wanted to make it’s subscribes happy. With the festive season that was just around the corner, the telecom company earlier this month on December 5th, 2016 launched their innovative and competitive daily voice bundles dubbed MyPakaPaka; that has been custom designed to fit the budgets and communication needs of MTN customers at an individual level.MTN uses each customer’s usage behavior and average spend to create three 24-hour bundles, completely unique to each customer. The MyPakaPaka bundles cost from as low as 250 UGX up to 3,000 UGX for duration varying from 5 minutes to as many as 100 minutes and can be used to make calls to any other customer on the MTN network.MTN Reduces Mobile Money Sending Rates as Part of it’s Festive Season PromotionWe always complain about things being expensive that at times we can’t afford to purchase them/ use the service. Well! early last month on November 7th, 2016 during a press conference that was held at the MTN Service Centre Towers at Forest Mall, Lugogo, announced they had reduced their mobile money sending charges for tiered amounts between 500 UGX and 45,000 UGX.Today, we are announcing reduced #MobileMoney sending charges for tiered amounts between 500 and 45,000/-.— MTN Uganda (@mtnug) November 7, 2016“We are excited to deliver the first festive season offer, making sending even more affordable for customers on MTN Mobile Money,” MTN’s General Manager for Financial Services; Phrase Lubega said during the press conference. However, the offer isn’t for a life time, it’s expected to go at least until end of the year.MTN Uganda celebrates it’s 18th birthdayAnd why in the world, would we forget to mention that MTN took another step in aging. October 21st, 2016, the telecom company turned 18th year of existence since it’s official launch on October 21st, 1998 in Uganda.Tomorrow MTN turns 18 and we have a gift for you. Keep your MTN number active so that you don’t miss out! #MTNat18 pic.twitter.com/5XxX5ONJec— MTN Uganda (@mtnug) October 20, 2016In its 18 years of existence, the company under it’s slogan “Everywhere you go” has done more than a lot to the now-and-then population of Uganda, from it’s mobile technologies 2G, 3G, and 4G-LTE, to Fixed Lines, to Fiber solutions, to creating employment opportunities to our people of Uganda. We had a lot about MTN Uganda this year, you can read all our articles at this link.Happy Holidays!!last_img read more

BENS BLOG What percentage of Punters behave fairly

first_img[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Racing Post today, carry an article regarding a recent survey, conducted by The Gambling Commission (I pay their wages). They lead with the statistic, that only 34% of the public believe that betting is conducted fairly.Just in case, The Gam Com haven’t considered the other side of the coin, I have put forward this alternative viewpoint, to The RP. JUST IN CASE.Dear Editor,Further to your article on page 14 of Thursday’s Racing Post, regarding only 34% of the public believing that betting is carried out fairly, did the Gambling Commission also ask the following questions?1) Do people believe that Punters pay their debts on time (or at all)?2) Do people believe that Punters try to corrupt members of Staff, at a bookmaker’s, to put bets on after the off for them?3) Do people believe that the vast majority of Punters now, only have a pure sense of entitlement, and take a free-bet or silly offer, and then move onto the next soft-touch?Before the Holier-Than-Thou Committee get up to full speed, for their next attack, these questions should be asked.Yours sincerely,Ben Keith(Star Sports Owner)Over and out, B xlast_img read more

first_imgSimon Nott is author of:Skint Mob! Tales from the Betting RingCLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS Apart from getting our twitter account suspended for alleged infringement of RMG’s copyright (there’s a blog for a later date) which was unexpected – the criticism for betting 1/5 the odds in 16-21 runner handicaps on course but not off (go to starsports.bet or call 08000 521 321 to open an account) which was predictable – Star Sports got genuinely unexpected criticism from some quarters for publicising big bets that were laid. One on-course bookmaker who I have a lot of respect for even described the way we publicise big bets as ‘vulgar’. I was quite taken back by that and some of the other comments on social media. The reason for my surprise is that reporting big bets is almost as old as racing itself, still practised in the press today as it has been in the Racing Post and its predecessor The Sporting Life for decades. The earliest record I could find was in The Sporting Magazine dated February 1826 where transactions on the Derby were reported including a bet of ‘£18,000 – £1,000 laid against a horse called The General, by ‘one sporting character’ as well as £1,700 – £100 taken against him many times over.’ The report was followed up by a list of odds for the race. The first bet equates to roughly a bet of £1,260,000 to £70,000 in today’s money, they knew how to have it on back in those days, Ben will have to up his game. Incidentally, the race was won by 50/1 shot Lap-Dog not even listed at the time, another cop for ‘Sporting Characters’ and quite right too.Moving swiftly on to the 1980’s, when I first got into racing, stories of Terry Ramsden having hundreds of thousands on the likes of Katies and Brunico captivated me. I used to annoy the local William Hill betting shop manager because I was always unpinning his newspapers to look on the other side searching for results and any big-bets contained therein. I also remember seeing a photo of a horse in mid-air at the last in a race, at I think Newbury, then another of it crumpling on landing, the £100,000 bet someone had placed, going down with it.Moving forward to the late 1980’s there was a documentary screened on TV ‘A day in the life of Barney Curley’ where Barney is filmed backing a horse to win £10,000, with the fractions, come racing, on the rail before we see him watch impassively as his bet gets beaten. I had that recorded on a VHS tape for years, if anyone has a copy please let me know.At around the same time rails bookmaker Stephen Little had become well-known for laying huge bets on the rails. He was happy to lay them and report them too because he thought it good for business to let potential big-staking punters to know where to come if they wanted accommodating. Not only were those bets reported in the press but also on television where, by this time, John McCririck had brought the hitherto racecourse-exclusive colour and excitement of the betting ring into everyone’s front room. Moving further on, who wasn’t enthralled by the well-publicised punting battles between J.P McManus and the late, great, Freddie Williams? What punter didn’t love hearing about Gary Wiltshire’s apocalyptic losses on Fujiyama Crest, the last leg of Frankie’s magnificent 7?In my humble opinion all of the aforementioned add to the glamour, colour and mystique that make up a lot of the huge tapestry that is British horseracing, and certainly much of its appeal to the non-racing on-looker. So why do people suddenly think that it’s wrong to publicise the bets? Ben Keith has several individual qualities but his undisputed unique selling point of his Star Sports business, on and off course, is the willingness to take on large-staking punters at the right price. As with Stephen Little before him, reporting bets is the only real way of letting potential big punters know where and with whom they can be on. The only difference between Stephen’s time and Ben’s at Royal Ascot is that we know have the added publicity vehicle of social media, predominantly twitter, with which to get news of those bets out there, it’s just the same as the reports of the ‘Sporting Character’ in 1826, just more bang up to date.It must be noted that by the end of his career Stephen Little had stopped reporting his bets to the press because ‘one journalist almost identified my punter’. That fact also ties nicely into my conclusion of this blog that some twitter pundits proclaimed that by publicising the big bets, the punter’s privacy was being invaded. Codswallop. The bets reported are just figures, nobody is identified, on-course commission agents don’t identify their clients that’s why they are used. That as a given, any business from a punter who asks for their bets to be kept in-house aren’t reported, of which there are several that bet with Star Sports. There won’t be many that would argue that the betting ring at mid-week meetings is a shadow of its former self. That’s an incredibly sad thing to see for someone like me who has worked in it all their working life. It’s also heartening that the big meetings are as busy, yes big cash punters are very rare these day, but those mega punters that know where to go, can get lumps on and still do. I’m sure advertising those bets still bring an added dimension to the enjoyment of those watching and reading at home. At monster-bet levels, as with the £375,000 and £400,000 bets Star Sports laid at the 2017 Cheltenham Festival, they become mainstream news and can transcend racing into general sporting media which surely has to be a good and not a vulgar thing?Simon Nott.last_img read more

Smart shock absorbers for quakeprone structures

first_imgShareCONTACT: Jade BoydPHONE: 713-348-6778E-MAIL: jadeboyd@rice.edu‘Smart’ shock absorbers for quake-prone structuresRice leads project to design adaptive dampers for buildings and bridgesRice University structural engineering researchers are leading a new $1.6 million research program funded by the National Science Foundation to help design a new generation of adaptive, “smart” shock absorbers for buildings and bridges in earthquake-prone areas. “What we are trying to do is to come up with new and intelligent ways to develop smart buildings and bridges that sense what’s happening when a quake hits and react in real-time,” said principal investigator Satish Nagarajaiah, professor in civil and environmental engineering and professor in mechanical engineering and materials science. To imagine what a building undergoes in an earthquake, Nagarajaiah suggests imaging yourself standing in a moving bus or train. “Riders make their bodies and muscles tense when the bus moves, and they relax as soon as the sudden motion stops,” Nagarajaiah said. “The typical steel-framed building or bridge can’t do that, but we want to find technologies like adaptive stiffness and damping systems that can give structures that ability.” Nagarajaiah said about 100 U.S. buildings and bridges — including the famed Golden Gate Bridge — have been built or are being retrofitted with large, passive dampers, which work just like the shock absorbers in a car, using pistons and hydraulic fluid to absorb the impact of sudden shocks. But passive dampers do not have the ability to adjust their properties—such as stiffness and damping—in real time. By design, they perform the same way in every earthquake, but Nagarajaiah said quake researchers have discovered in recent years that all quakes are not created equal. The 1994 Northridge earthquake in California, the 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan, the 1999 Chi Chi earthquake in Taiwan and the most recent 2008 Sichuan earthquake in China are each examples of quakes that delivered a massive, initial shockwave that was particularly damaging for structures near the epicenter. “Our aim is to create smart structures that have the intelligence to sense what kind of shock is arriving and react with the best possible strategy to minimize damage,” Nagarajaiah said. Nagarajaiah’s earlier research on smart structures and structural control for seismic protection has led to quake-protection systems that have been implemented in China and Japan. In the newly funded project, his lab is partnering with researchers at the University at Buffalo; Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; the University of California, Los Angeles; and California State University, Fresno. The grant was awarded through the NSF’s George E. Brown Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation, or NEES. The 15 NEES sites provide a shared network of experimental facilities, earthquake simulation software and online collaborative tools that allow earthquake researchers across the country to perform large-scale experiments remotely. The advantages are that universities without large-scale facilities can perform experiments remotely at a NEES site, and costs of testing are borne by the NEES site that is separately funded by NSF, thus allowing the researchers to use the entire grant for theoretical research and validation. Nagarajaiah said he and his colleagues will coordinate and run experiments at the University of Buffalo’s NEES site, the Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory. The lab has state-of-the-art shake tables and large-scale building and bridge models that Nagarajaiah’s team can access via the Internet. AddThislast_img read more

Are the late Stephen Hawkings religious beliefs typical of UK scientists

first_imgAddThis Return to article. Long DescriptionElaine Howard Ecklund. Photo by Jeff Fitlow. In a new study, researchers from Rice University, Baruch College and West Virginia University find that U.K. scientists are indeed significantly less religious than the U.K. general population. In addition, U.K. scientists at elite universities are more likely to never attend religious services than those at less prestigious schools. The study also indicates biologists are more likely to never attend religious services than physicists.“The Religiosity of Academic Scientists in the United Kingdom: Assessing the Role of Discipline and Department Status” utilizes data collected in a survey of biologists and physicists employed at elite and nonelite departments, as past research has suggested the distinction could be relevant in understanding differences in religiosity. The researchers were interested in how U.K. scientists, particularly those who work at elite schools, compared to the general population with regard to religious beliefs. The researchers found that while only 18 percent of people in the U.K. said they do not believe in God, 45 percent of U.K. scientists responded the same way. In addition, the researchers discovered that scientists in elite departments (a categorization based on the number of publications per department, published department rankings and insider knowledge) are about twice as likely to never attend religious services than scientists in nonelite departments.Elaine Howard Ecklund, the Herbert S. Autrey Chair in Social Sciences, professor of sociology, director of Rice’s Religion and Public Life Program and the study’s lead author, observes that that elite scientists may represent the leading edge of the secularizing effects of science.“Individuals who are at the most elite institutions may disproportionately feel the cultural pressure to secularize,” Ecklund said. “So, if those methods and mindset are inherently in conflict with religion, then these successful scientists would experience the greatest erosion of religious faith.”Ecklund noted that such findings could also be a product of social forces rather than intellectual ones.“This distinction could have an impact on how the public views scientists, in a national context where some minority groups are bringing challenges to teaching evolutionary theory, for example,” she said.“Elite scientists might express less religiosity because they assume that, as elite scientists, they are supposed to be or need to be less religious to fit a professional ideal,” she added. “Because they might already be on the fringes of that professional ideal in the first place, nonelite scientists may feel less social and cultural pressure to further conform to it.”Study co-author Christopher P. Scheitle of West Virginia University’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology said this might also help explain why U.K. biologists are more than 2½ times more likely to never attend religious services than British physicists.“It is possible that U.K. biologists might be concerned that being seen as a more active participant in religion would violate some professional norm,” said Jared Peifer, an assistant professor in the Department of Management at Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Business.Ecklund added: “This norm might result from the history of public conflict surrounding issues like evolution and human embryonic stem cell research, which are most clearly connected to the biological sciences.”The researchers hope their work will help foster a better understanding of the social dynamics between religion and science beyond the traditional focus on the U.S.The study was funded by a grant from the Templeton World Charity Foundation.-30-For more information, contact Amy McCaig, senior media relations specialist at Rice, at 713-348-6777 or amym@rice.edu.This news release can be found online at http://news.rice.edu/.Follow Rice News and Media Relations via Twitter @RiceUNews.Related materials:Study: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jssr.12552Elaine Howard Ecklund website: http://www.elainehowardecklund.com/Religion and Public Life Program website: https://rplp.rice.edu/Photo link: https://news.rice.edu/files/2018/10/180202_-Ecklund_fitlow_001-1sn3obk.gifPhoto credit: Rice University/Jeff FitlowLocated on a 300-acre forested campus in Houston, Rice University is consistently ranked among the nation’s top 20 universities by U.S. News & World Report. Truck Smashes Into Iowa WalMart Store Killing 3 People

first_img A pickup truck smashed through the front doors of an Iowa Wal-Mart store on Thursday, killing three people and scattering merchandise on the floor before it came to a stop at the fresh produce section in what authorities believe was a tragic accident.A photograph posted by the Des Moines Register showed the pickup resting near a sign that said “Fresh Produce,” with boxes and other debris behind it. Witnesses said the truck entered through the front doors in the grocery portion of the store and came to a rest after hitting a refrigerated produce display.“At this time, we don’t have any reason to believe it was intentional,” said Patrol Sgt. Nathan Ludwig, who was at the scene of the crash. Ludwig said officials are investigating all possible scenarios. The crash in Pella, Iowa, just before 10 a.m. killed three people — all outside the vehicle — and injured the driver and another person, Ludwig said. None of those killed or injured were children.Authorities had not released the identities of those involved by late Thursday afternoon as officials worked to inform family members of the casualties. Ludwig said he did not have the medical conditions of those hurt.Don French, a Wal-Mart employee who was off duty and shopping in the store Thursday morning, told the Des Moines Register that the truck had been traveling fast enough to smash through the concrete barriers intended to protect the entrance from such crashes. French said he heard the crash, rushed to see what had happened and found a horrific scene with the pickup truck inside the store and severely injured people.“I understand that two of the victims were co-workers and friends of mine,” he said before pausing and breaking into tears. “We’re a small town. We’re a community. We’re family here.”Witnesses also told Knoxville, Iowa radio station KNIA/KRLS that the truck was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash. The store was evacuated and closed Thursday as law enforcement investigated.Wal-Mart management said in a statement: “We’re heartbroken by what appears to be a tragic accident.”Pella — a city of 10,000 known for its Dutch roots and fully functional 1850s-style windmill — is 38 miles southeast of Des Moines. LA Authorities Boost Security After Threatened Rail Attack

first_img US Show Discussion LINKEDINPINTERESTREDDITTUMBLRSTUMBLEUPON Share LOS ANGELES—The FBI said Tuesday it found no evidence that a bomb threat which prompted heightened security at a Los Angeles subway station was real and the anonymous caller who made it may have reported similar phony threats in the past. However, Los Angeles police and Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies remained on “a heightened state of awareness,” FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said in a statement Tuesday night.Heavily-armed deputies stood watch Tuesday at the Universal Station of the Metro Red Line after a threat that said some event would happen that day.Mayor Eric Garcetti, who took the commuter train to work from the station as a show of confidence, said the warning was made anonymously to an overseas tip line.“So this threat did not come from a person directly,” he said. “It came from a person who said they knew of a person.”The mayor didn’t provide details, but Los Angeles police Cmdr. Horace Frank said the threat was sent to a public safety line by someone in Australia who specifically mentioned that an “explosive device” would be detonated at the station on Tuesday, City News Service reported.Temporary barriers were in place at the entrance to the Red Line station near Universal Studios and some commuters were subjected to bag searches as deputies stood by with rifles and dogs.Nothing happened by Tuesday night, and the FBI said there was no evidence of a credible threat.“Based on significant similarities, law enforcement partners also believe the anonymous caller may have, on a previous occasion, reported threats that did not materialize,” Eimiller said.Information about the potential threat was relayed to the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force from international partners Monday morning and was publicly revealed in a Monday night press conference.Area U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff, ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said he was briefed by law enforcement about the threat.“While the threat is still under investigation, law enforcement and local officials acted appropriately by alerting the public promptly, increasing security and urging residents to go about their normal daily business,” he said in a statement that recalled a threat that closed the Los Angeles Unified School District last December.“If it turns out to be a hoax like the prior threat against the LAUSD, it will represent another profound example of the extraordinary cost imposed on communities throughout the United States by such actions,” Schiff added. The Universal City Red Line station is adjacent to the studio theme park, the Universal CityWalk entertainment district, hotels and office buildings. The line carries commuters from the San Fernando Valley to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. About 150,000 riders a day take it and the Purple Line, which covers some of the same route.center_img Share this article Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies stand on guard as morning commuters arrive at the Universal City Red Line station in Los Angeles, on Dec. 6, 2016.
